Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Nifty slips from highs to end weekly expiry below 24,600; Banks drag

Stock Market Highlights: A day of two halves and a day that would have left the bulls disappointed. The Nifty faced hurdles at the 24,750 – 24,800 zone on what was the first Tuesday expiry for its contracts after the new rules. From the resistance band, the index saw a sharp fall during the final two hours of the trading session and closed nearly 200 points below the intraday high. Not only did the Nifty fail to sustain 24,700, but also the 24,600 mark, and along with it, the 20 and 100-Day Moving Average, both of which were crossed in intraday trading.

The Nifty Bank continues to remain a principal culprit of the Nifty underperformance, declining 500 points from the highs of the day to close below the 54,000 mark yet again. The broader markets also cooled off from the highs, but managed to hold on to some gains. Sugar stocks led the surge today, followed by gains seen in tyre stocks as well as the PSU names, including the railway and defence stocks. The experts continue to believe that the market texture remains sell-on-rallies. Read on to catch up on the day’s action.
