Indices snap two-day gaining streak, Nifty 50 back below 24,100

Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: The Indian equity market snapped its two-day gaining streak on Friday, with the benchmark indices closing sharply lower. The broader markets were also in the red, with the Midcap index retreating 177 points to close at 57,931. The Nifty Bank index recorded a steep fall of 617 points, finishing at 50,989.

Among sectoral performers, IT stocks faced notable selling pressure. Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and TCS were among the top Nifty losers. Auto major Hero MotoCorp slipped nearly 2% following weak December sales data. Conversely, Tata Motors managed a 3% gain, supported by robust trading volumes.

In the week gone by, the markets closed higher for two consecutive sessions before Friday’s decline. Both the Sensex and Nifty gained 1% each over the week, with the Midcap index outperforming, climbing nearly 2%. Auto stocks continued to shine, rising 4% over the week, while realty stocks lagged, declining 2%.

The week saw 39 of 50 Nifty stocks end in the green, with ONGC, Maruti, Eicher Motors, and Bajaj Finserv among the top gainers. On the other hand, Wipro, Hindalco, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories emerged as the key losers.
